Embroidery Never Looked So Good

I cannot stop staring at this gorgeous hand embroidery! This piece is part of the 'Turns of Speech & Figures of Phrase' series by MaricorMaricar. The series was inspired by lyrics misheard and mixed up and features lyrics borrowed from bands such as Blondie. It opened March 3rd and runs until the March 19th at Mart Gallery in Sydney, Australia. Check it out for me! I'm thinking they should get into pillows, I'd buy one!

'American Idol' results: Top 11 revealed
The group sing is a mashup of "Born to Be Wild" and "Born This Way." Can you spot the theme? Then there is the weekly commercial for something or another that they have to do every week.
Montage of the Idols talking about languages, accents and pets. No, seriously. I'm not making a joke there.
Time for some results: Casey Abrams, Jacob Lusk and Lauren Alaina come forward. Ryan asks Randy for clarification about what singers can do to avoid being pitchy. He helpfully explains that "pitchy" means they are either flat or sharp. Jennifer Lopez chimes in that it sometimes happens when they can't hear themselves over the music on the stage, "but we're going to work on that next week." Fakeout, they're all safe!
Haley Reinhart and Paul McDonald are next. Haley's in danger, and Paul is safe.
Reigning American Idol Lee DeWyze next hits the stage to debut his new song, "Beautiful Like You." Hi, Lee! It seems like a lot more than a year since you won, but I've been really busy.
Results again: Scott McCreary is safe. Pia Toscano? Safe. James Durbin, also safe.
Stefano Langone and Naima Adedapo come forward. Stefano is safe, and Naima is in danger.
Lastly, Karen Rodriguez and Thia Megia hit the stage. Thia's safe, Karen is not.
The Black Eyed Peas debut their new single, "Just Can't Get Enough," with some help from string players in extremely high-waisted pants.
In the bottom three are Karen Rodriguez, Naima Adedapo and Haley Reinhart.
Naima learns she is safe, as is Haley. Karen has to sing for her life and possibly earn the judges' save. She sings Mariah Carey's "Hero." She gives it her all, and she's OK, but it's not enough. Randy says it is "not unanimous," which means someone wanted to save her. But one vote isn't going to do it.
What do you think about the results?

'The Amazing Race' recap: From China to India
Bucky's back with a recap of tonight's TAR:
Here we are at the … what? I’ve sort of lost count … 6th leg, I think, of The Amazing Race.
The teams leave the Pit Stop, with the Cowboys departing first at 2:14 and Zev & Justin departing last at 4:10. Teams must go to a tea shop and have a tea tasting, which Phil tells us (but not them) will play an important part in a later challenge.
From the tea tasting the teams all catch the same flight to Kolkata, India, where a bunch of maniac cab drivers race them to Town Hall for their next clue. Of course, Town Hall is closed and won’t open until the next morning at 10 a.m. So the teams all camp on the street. Reality Check commenter Capt. Jack has noted that it seems the show is doing things to save money this season and here, again, is an example of that. No hotel bill for CBS tonight.

'The Bachelor' finale: Brad makes a decision
I haven't been following this season of The Bachelor all that closely. A number of my friends who have been watching have all been rooting for one outcome: for him to pick Emily.
I'll link to the Showtracker's full recap tomorrow, but if you are seeking an early look at what happened, here it is. (SPOILER ALERT)
After visiting with his family and talking extensively with them, Brad did indeed to propose, and it was indeed to Emily.
What do you think about these developments?
Edited to add: I'm coming back after seeing the "after the rose" special to ask if anyone else was totally put off by people's reactions to Emily? When she admitted that she wasn't ready to get married today, and the audience recoiled in shock (with an "ooooooooh"), I kind of couldn't believe it. They haven't been able to be in public together until now. Why would she want to get married to someone she hasn't even been out to dinner with in a regular setting? I thought she was being perfectly reasonable -- and nervous to be under such scrutiny. But the whole setup became so awkward, and it didn't need to be.
And while it was nice to bring back the successful Bachelor couples to give them advice, it just felt a little premature to be deciding that the relationship was in trouble. She has a child! She has a responsibility to be sure this is the right thing to do before going through with it. I was just beyond irritated with the premise that she was doing something wrong or acting inappropriately.

'American Idol' results: Who's going on tour?
On tonight's American Idol, we'll learn who is going to end up in the Top 10.
We see that Marc Anthony was their mentor this week, giving them some feedback about how to use the stage and the in-ear mikes and all kinds of stuff. (We also see that he didn't always agree with wife Jennifer Lopez's feedback. Hmm.)
The group sing follows with the Motown theme from last night with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," though there seem to be a few technical issues (Lauren and Casey's part, when they're in the stands, is quite quiet in the middle). Then a door opens, and there's Stevie Wonder! He sings "Signed Sealed Delivered" with the Top 11, and I think it was a bit of surprise for the judges because they look pretty stunned. Love it! Speaking of surprises, Stevie makes Steven Tyler stand up and they start singing "Happy Birthday," presenting him with a painting and a cake.

Found: the perfect, utterly gorgeous 1920s inspired dress
? Day 64 of Vintage 365 ?
The 1920s were a phenomenal decade. It's impossible to adequately sum them up in a few lines (and indeed many splendid books are devoted to this decade of transformation), but I know that when I reflect upon the roaring 20s, I'm met with thoughts that are often equally divided between great literary works and stellar fashions.
To me the clothes of the 20s had in common with those of the 1960s the fact that they ushered in a very new (one might say "radical") way of dressing - particularly for women. By and large, by the time the twenties zipped into town faster than a Model T down a dusty back road, most women had shed off the elaborate corsetry and related layers of undergarments (petticoats, crinolines, etc) that had been much in use still up until the end of the Edwardian period. Hemlines were inching ever higher - much as hairstyles were growing increasingly shorter.
It is perhaps all too easy to reflect upon the 1920s and call to mind nothing but an endless string of flapper girls and Ziegfeld Follies style vixens, and while such women and the looks they sported were indeed a central part of the decade, not all women on the 20s adopted such "new age" styles. Yet, that didn't mean that those women weren?t still very fashion forward in their own wonderful way.
The 1920s saw the widespread adoption of loser cute garments, lightweight fabrics, tiered layers, cloche hats, dark lipstick, and a fad for ethnically inspired pieces (e.g., styles that channelled Egypt, ancient Greece, and the Orient). Today most of the looks of the 20s seem very tame, but in their day they were ground-breaking and they deserve to serve as a continual source of wardrobe inspiration for today's world.
If like me however, you just don't have the thin-as-a-rail figure to effectively pull off a flapper's short-skirted dress, or if you're looking for a style that's a bit easier to pull off on a regular basis, I may very well have found the perfect dress amongst the fantastic offerings on Buffalo Gal Vintage's website.
Made of the softest, most ethereally enchanting layers of (what looks to me to be) chiffon in a whisper faint lavender hue, this incredible 1920s inspired dress (seen above) is the kind of flattering style that a great many figure types can pull off immensely well.
Striking the perfect balance between romance and practicality, this sophisticated frock would be stunning for a garden party, summer wedding (either as a guest or the bride!), church event, baby shower, evening date, trip to the theater, art gallery show, or any number of other outings that call for timelessly beautiful style.
Available in ladies sizes Small to XL (all of which are generously cut, thanks to the flowing drape of this elegant frock), this gorgeous 1920s style dress (which features a tie front, scoop neckline, embroidery, and ribbon detailing) is available for $167.00 from Buffalo Gal Vintage.
I look at this dress and am inspired; it captures the best of 1920s fashion in a cut, hue and style that are every bit as timeless and romantic as any flapper girl, FitzGerald character or dancing Folly could ever be - making it the perfect frock for any 1920s loving vintage lass.

Nashville Stars Donate Clothes To Animal Charity
Written by Delinda Lombardo
Nashville has a new star by the name of Lori Elam, a remarkable woman inspired by the loss of her pets to open a new consignment shop that sells clothing donated by country music artists and celebrities in efforts to raise money for animal rescue efforts.
“When I lost those two [pets], I met this world of people who are out there saving animals. They educated me on how animals were being treated and being euthanized, and it was a whole other culture that I was not aware of,” Elam told the Tennessean.
Elam’s celebrity consignment shop Estrella will open in May on 12South Avenue.
The nonprofit consignment shop is already well stocked. Items available include country singers James Otto’s biker helmet, Kellie Pickler's autographed T-shirt; and over 150 pieces of clothing, hats and shoes from celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Emmylou Harris, Rascal Flatts member Jay DeMarcus, Christian artist Amy Grant and singer Naomi Judd.
All profits from the ‘Estrella’ boutique will benefit Noah’s Ark Society, a nonprofit that Elam and her husband, Wade, founded in late 2010 to feed, care for and nurse to health cats, dogs, horses, rabbits and birds.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with these gorgeous vintage inspired peep-toe pumps
? Day 74 of Vintage 365 ?
Just because St. Patty's Day is one of those holidays - much like Valentine's Day and Halloween - that we don't get off from work (seriously, why not? We're so starved for statutory holidays over here in North America!), doesn't mean it isn't every bit as worthy of celebrating as say those we do.
Whether you're veins course with Irish blood or you merely embrace the Irish spirit for a day on March 17th, St. Pat's is one of those good times, have a blast, cheer with the best of them holidays that is definitely further enhanced by the wearing of verdant hues that instantly call to mind the pastoral landscape of Ireland (trust me, I lived in Ireland for two years, they really are that green!), meadows blossoming with clover (shamrocks), and the emerald band that appears in the Irish flag.
If however, you're not too keen on kitschy shamrock shaped glasses, comically oversized stovepipe hats, and novelty t-shirts soliciting smooches because you're Irish, fear not, it's still entirely possible to go green on St. Patrick's Day in a way that would make any Irishman's heart swell with pride.
Personally, I stick with my usual vintage style, however I make sure to reach for pieces in hues of green and gold. The thought hit me the other day however, that I don't currently own any green vintage shoes!
Given that we?re just two days away at this point, it may be too late to remedy that issue for this St. Patty's Day. However, I found a pair online that would look ravishing on absolutely any March 17th!
Cut in a sleek, sophisticated style that instantly calls to mind similar shoes from the 1940s and 50s, these classy Nina Culver peep-toe pumps - in a shade called Apple Green - are so gorgeous you'll want to sport them on St. Pat?s Day and all 364 other days of the year, too!
Made of satin, featuring a lovely crossed band section over the toe area, and a 2.25 inch heel, these feminine green pumps cost $79.95 and are available from Zappos in ladies full and half sizes in 5-11.
They would look ravishing paired with shades of brown, ivory, cream, white, rust, teal, navy, denim, black, and peach (to name but a few), and would definitely show your of Irish spirit if you wore them on St. Patrick's Day (and if you ask, me they're worthy of a kiss from a fine Irish gent far more than any t-shirt! ).

'American Idol' recap: Top 13 perform
Janell reports on last night's American Idol. I thought some of the kids did their own idols proud; others, not so much:
Season 10 Top 13 recap, people! We made it to another milestone. The sands of the hourglass keep on trickling down, just like Socrates said. Actually, as I recall, he phrased it thusly: “Dust. Wind. Dude.” Thanks for the history lesson, Bill and Ted. Party on. In recognition of how far we’ve come, and of how far we have yet to go, I’m going to make a pledge to you, the recap-reading audience. I will attempt to correctly identify every song covered tonight. This may mean actual research. Yes, I want to be your one-stop source for both correct song titles and descriptions of Steven Tyler’s outfits. Let’s see how well I do.
Man, the show does not give us a very long full-body shot of the judges as they walk out. Steven is wearing a white shirt with almost see-through swirly patterns, and it’s tied at the waist. Over that is a black blazer with a leopard print pocket square, and he’s wearing jeans plus the usual Captain Jack dangly feathers and bobbles. Jennifer Lopez is wearing a cute grey party dress with black polka dots, and she is owning the bright red lipstick. Randy Jackson is wearing a letterman sweater with questionably artistic holes in it.
Ryan informs us that the official countdown to the finale has begun. Isn’t that what I just said through Socrates? Tonight, the contestants will sing a song by their personal idol, and they will work closely with Jimmy Iovine and other producers. Let’s get started.

Willie Nelson Records Rolling Stones Classic For Animal Charity
The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) has announced the exclusive release of the Rolling Stones’ classic “Wild Horses” – performed and produced by the legendary Willie Nelson and his family members.
Willie & The Nelson Family are donating the proceeds from the sale of the song to AWI’s campaigns on behalf of wild and domestic horses. Willie and the entire Nelson family are long-time supporters of AWI and its efforts to end horse slaughter and preserve the right of wild horses to roam free.
“The BLM has been rounding them up at an alarming rate, supposedly for their own good. Sadly, there are more wild horses in holding pens than in the wild. Something is wrong with that, so we must act now before the BLM has managed these magnificent animals into extinction,” said Willie Nelson. “It’s time for the cowboys to stand up for the horses.”
The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was enacted in 1971 to halt the disappearance of these iconic animals from public lands in the American West. Since then, however, over 20 million acres of land set aside by Congress for wild horses have been removed from their range, even as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) – the very agency charged with their protection – claims there is not enough land to support existing herds. The BLM is unnecessarily removing horses based on spurious claims of damage to range and other adverse impacts. The BLM’s mismanagement of America’s wild horses is largely designed to benefit a livestock industry that has for decades, exploited western public lands while profiting from massive subsidies funded by taxpayer dollars. Willie & The Nelson Family and AWI are calling on the BLM and the Obama administration to immediately halt all wild horse round-ups, restore the land provided by law to wild horses and to stop warehousing horses on private lands at even greater expense to the taxpayer.
“There is no greater voice than Willie Nelson when it comes to speaking for the underdog. For decades, Willie has fought to protect family farmers in America, while also advocating for the humane treatment of horses and other animals,” said Chris Heyde, deputy director of government and legal affairs for AWI. “We are so grateful for the support of Willie and the entire Nelson family and we hope this song will raise awareness of the deteriorating situation facing wild horses and help turn things around before they disappear from their lands forever.”
To download your very own copy of Willie & The Nelson Family singing “Wild Horses,” please visit www.awionline.org/willienelson today! You can download a copy from your favorite service such as iTunes, Amazon and CDBaby.

Calling all canucks and fellow history buffs
? Day 81 of Vintage 365 ?
There are few topics in the whole universe that I love and devote my time to as much as history. From the earliest of ages, I've been enamoured with the past; insatiably curious to know what happened during the lifetimes of those who walked this earth before me. My love of all things vintage is an extension of the general adoration for history that I have, and indeed writing about historical events and figures is by far one of my favourite elements of creating this blog.
I'm always on the prowl for great sources of historical information and trivia (include who was born and who passed away on a certain date), and recently discovered a super handy Canadian On This Day website that lists numerous interesting historical facts for each day of the year - all of which have a Canadian slant to them.
{Amongst the various events that have taken place in Canadian history on March 22nd, one finds the birth in 1909 of the highly influential, prolific French Canadian author, Gabrielle Roy, whose ground-breaking novel Bonheur d'occasion (published in English as The Tin Flute), set in Montreal, is sometimes credited for laying the foundation for Quebec's Quiet Revolution in the 1960s. So great was Roy's impact on Canadian culture and history, that a quote from her, "Could we ever know each other in the slightest without the arts?", appears (in both English and French) on the back of the Canadian $20 bill, as a wonderful reminder for future generation of this insightful Canadian author.}
While the events that took place some dates may not always be earth-shatteringly interesting, others certainly are, and together they all work together to help weave the rich tapestry that is Canadian history.
If like me you can never get enough of the past and enjoy learning fun facts about Canadian history, than be sure to bop on over On This Day and bookmark it for any time you want to look up what happened on a particular day in this vast, delightful land of ours called Canada.

Embrace Daylight Saving Time with this elegant Pottery Barn alarm clock
? Day 71 of Vintage 365 ?
Remember that sweet little saying we learned in grade school, "Spring forward, fall back", that applies to remembering which direction in which to move your clocks come Daylight Saving Time? Well, given that tomorrow marks the day on which we need to (so the powers that be insist) whirl the hour hands on our clocks ahead by an hour, that expression has been bopping around in my brain all week.
I don't mind DST (also known in the UK as "Summer Time") too much, and certainly get why it's done (more daylight each day during the spring and summer, yay!) - yet there's no denying that at some point in our lives nearly every one of us will forget to move our clocks ahead (in the spring) or backwards (in the autumn; this year on Sunday November 6th) at least once.
Is that the end of the world? Most likely, no, but it can make you late (or early) for work, school, or any other early morning event. As such it helps to employ the use of a handy-dandy alarm clock that you've been certain to adjust accordingly for the time change the evening before (so in case of DTS this spring, that means setting your clocks forward an hour tonight - don't say I didn't remind you :) ).
Believing that nearly everything is better when it's vintage - or looks as though it could be vintage - I went in search of a delightfully old school approved alarm clock to help you, me and everyone else ensure they're fashionably ready for DST. After a spot of online hunting, I unearthed this rather gorgeous, gleamingly silver hued vintage alarm clock from Pottery Barn.
Posh to the point of being stately, this beautifully classic looking alarm clock is made from iron sheeting with a polished nickel finish, features subtle glow-in-the-dark tips on the minute and hour hands, and runs on just one little AA battery.
Called the Charleston Vintage Clock, this sophisticatedly lovely alarm clock (which sells for $39.00) would work exquisitely in an array of vintage and modern decors, and would definitely be one of the most stylish ways you could possibly "spring forward or fall back" come DST ever again!

The exciting adventures of Cherry Ames, mystery solving WW2 nurse
? Day 82 of Vintage 365 ?
All right vintage lovin' gals, hands up if you read Nancy Drew detective stories as a youngster? (*Enthusiastically thrusts hand in the air*) Now, hands up if you read Cherry Ames stories?
While perhaps not as famous as Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames was another beloved fictional female youth who broke onto the literary scene in the mid-20th century. Written by Helen Wells and Julie Campbell Tatham (each authored different books as opposed to collaborating on a story together),the myriad novels these ladies penned chronicled Cherry?s exciting adventures, and were favourites of mine as a youngster.
Though both Nancy?s and Cherry's tales were ones centered around mysteries, Cherry (whose full name was Charity) was a young nurse (the first two books in the 27 title series cover her time spent in nursing school) who held nursing positions in a variety of places, always ready and able to solve any strange conundrum that befell said medical establishments.
Though Cherry Ames books were written until 1968, they began during the war-torn year of 1943, and thus many of this bright and ambitious young nurse's first escapades deal with the world war that was in full force at the time. While these days few would raise an eyebrow at the idea of a female character in a girls' storybook series being a go-getter of a career woman, back when Cherry burst on the scene such fictional characters were relatively few and far between.
Cherry Ames' stories always struck me as being a bit more mature (though still entirely child-friendly in every sense) than Nancy Drew. It was fun to run around the house pretending to claw through cobweb covered attics and find clues in old clocks alla Nancy, but Cherry was a character I felt more like I wanted to emulate when I grew up. She was as much a role model to me as a girl in the (comparatively progressive) 80s and 90s, as she'd been for those in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.
Whether you spent your youth thumbing through Cherry's tales or are just hearing about her for the first time today, you can quickly add a serious dose of vintage medical mystery charm to your (and/or your child's) bookshelf with the immensely lovely boxed sets of Cherry Ames books that I just discovered this week on Amazon.
Though recently manufactured, these delightfully lovely stories have been packaged with their original vintage cover art, and come housed in elegant boxed set holders that makes it instantly easy to place anywhere you'd like around the house.
A great place to start off your Cherry Ames collection is with the boxed set above, which contains the first four stories in this entertaining series. Comprised of a quartet of hardcover books, this wonderfully old school looking Cherry Ames boxed set is quite a steal at $26.37.
Whether you'd like to help Cherry solve exciting medical detective stories yourself or think you know a budding youngster with their eye towards becoming a nurse or doctor, these absorbing mystery novels are a seriously fun way to lose yourself in a great vintage book.
