Men?s Clothing Sales for Labor Day Weekend

With fall right around the corner, a new school year starting up, and a long weekend in front of you, it’s a great time to do some shopping. As usual, when I shop, I look online for the best deals and to see what is in style, and I found some great mens clothing sales at both online stores and brick and mortar stores looking to bring in shoppers over the holiday weekend. I am looking for some slacks, shirts, and a jacket for my man, and found some great deals on weathered boot cut jeans and relaxed jeans that will look great on him, along with a couple pairs of nice dress slacks. Next, I found a beautiful light gray wool overcoat that should fit in with the trends towards more sophisticated and luxurious looks shown in this fall’s fashion shows, and a double-breasted tweed jacket

Christmas Eve has to be one of my favorite days of the year because my family has a tradition of having a simple dinner by fireside. This year my Dad actually made a bonfire in the backyard where we talked about what Christmas means to our family while we enjoyed cheese, crackers, flatbread, hummus, fruit, roasted vegetables mixed with pear (yum). All of the baskets lined up in the top picture housed all of the food. Then after we were done eating we went inside for the annual Christmas story read to the kids by my Momma as seen in the bottom picture. To top it off we loaded up in my my Dad's trailer where we drove around the neighborhood observing streets lined with luminaries. I loved how there were other families out as well..it wasn't uncommon to hear bandwagons busting out in song. My brother said that people busting out in Christmas carols makes him feel awkward...mostly the kind when people come to the front door and you are the only one at the door with people singing to you. I could appreciate his statement since we weren't raised as a serious song and dance kind of family (most of us). We usually only reserve busting out our song and dance for a laugh. In fact I thought about the time my date took me on a gondola ride and the the guide busted out in song..I laughed when I wasn't supposed to have laughed..then I laughed more because I was embarrassed. I may have a problem with laughing when I am not supposed to. At least I have been cured of not laughing during a prayer..that was the worst.

Whitney Houston's Death to be Ruled an Accident

After much speculation, singer Whitney Houston's tragic death will reportedly be ruled an accident.

E! News cites a source within the investigation, who has confirmed that the legendary singer, who passed away in Los Angeles on Feb. 11, did not die by her own hand, nor as the result of a deliberate action taken by anyone else.

Though the cause of death has been listed as "deferred" pending toxicology test reports, the inquiry is apparently nearing completion, and "nothing suspicious" has been turned up regarding Houston's physicians, or any other persons of interest related to the case.

British Columbia bound!

Fans of Canadian folk music may recall Gordon Lightfoot's classic 1970s song, Alberta Bound. It's something of an anthem for those headed to the land of open prairie skies, and its lyrics have been wafting through my mind for the last few days, as we've buzzed around like busy bees in preparation for our cross country move this week.

This time around though, our journey does not lead us to Alberta. Instead, as many of you know from my recent posts here, come late tomorrow evening, my husband and I will be touching down on British Columbia soil, ready to call Canada's most westerly province home (once again for me, first time for the mister).

The past several weeks have been ones of immense activity, planning, energy, fortitude, and a little bit of good old fashioned luck. Elbow grease, packing tape, and lengthy lists have abound, as has the enthusiasm that one could practically see hovering in the air around our place.

By this time tomorrow (assuming all goes as planned - and goodness, it better, our schedule for Thursday is so astronomically tight it makes a Victorian corset like like a muumuu!) the movers will be here, loading all of our earthly belongings (save for those in our suitcases) on to their large truck.

Somewhere, we're told, between 7 and 14 days after that, our household contents will reach us in beautiful British Columbia, and it is at that point that my husband and I will take up residency in our new home.

In the meantime, we'll be staying with some of my relatives who live in the same town, and thus I suspect that this will be my last post for the next little while. If circumstances permit, I may post during the next two weeks, but if not, I'll do so once we've settled into our new abode and have the good ol' interwebs hooked up once more.

I want to thank you all sincerely for you wonderful support, encouragement, and positive words over the past couple of months, as we've been preparing night and day for the move. They?re really helped to keep my batteries charged during this endlessly hectic period.

It is with great eagerness that I look forward to blogging next from my home province, and sharing in the joys of living in B.C with all of you.

Know that I'll miss you dearly, and that with all my heart, I'm wishing each of you every bit as much joy in your own life as I'm experiencing in mine right now. ?

First of all when I close my eyes I am seeing really cool shades of purple. I thought I had got that out of my system when I painted our guest room Peace & Happiness (Benjamin Moore)..do I sound like I have been taking or inhaling some brain altering substances..you know because I am seeing things and using colors called peace & happiness. Anyway today I not only feel passionate about the above colors but I also feel passionate about the following:

*Flowers and the prospects of the upcoming wildflower season, (above wildflower picture taken by me..I think I might blow it up).

*Oh mercy can we please discuss the new Mish jewelry shop in New York?? Look at those walls that were painted by Mark Uriu...what a hugely talented artist. I want those walls in my house. Images via The Style Saloniste.

*How about a new water-based nail polish by Scotch in Morning Glory Fizz (that is exactly the color of morning glory that grew in my back yard). Love the packaging too.

Two wonderfully fun vintage cream cheese tea party recipes

There is something about the often dreary, bitingly cold nature of mid-winter that begs for moments of extra special merriment to help shake off the doldrums that can accompany January.

One of the quickest, and surely most elegant, ways I know to do just that is to hold a tea party. Such a gathering can be as large or an intimate as you like - it can even be a party of one, just for yourself.

A few beautiful vintage cups and saucers, a freshly ironed table cloth, and a pretty frock are all you really need as your jumping off point for a wintertime tea party - aside from the snacks and beverages of course.

Tea parties are not designed designed to fill guests up to the extent of a buffet or multi-course meal, especially as they commonly take place between lunch and dinnertime. By the same token though, you certainly wouldn't want you friends' stomachs to rumble, so a selection of small, inviting, delicious foods is a must.

Today's vintage recipes are for a grape, pear, and cream cheese salad, as well as for delightfully chic ? and splendidly cute! - carrot and cream cheese sandwiches that are rolled up and adorned so as to resemble the shape of lilies (this recipe would be highly fitting for an Easter gathering, too).

Mia Farrow Launches Polio Vaccination Campaign In Chad

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow has participated in the launching ceremony of the national polio campaign in Chad, a country that registered the second highest number of polio cases in the world.

“To see the eradication of polio would be very meaningful to me personally,” said Mia Farrow, who had polio as a child and whose son, adopted from India, is paraplegic from polio. “The challenge here in Chad is to convince all parents that the vaccine is safe and to reach every child, even in the most remote places.”

The UNICEF supported polio vaccination campaign comes at a pivotal time in the global push to eradicate the crippling disease. India, which two years ago registered the highest number of polio cases, made history in January by going a full year without a single case.

The success from India follows a major vaccination drive, with millions of volunteers combing the country to vaccinate every single child. In addition, more focus was put on ensuring access to clean water, sanitation and nutrition to help children absorb the vaccine and prevent the virus from spreading.

In 2011, Chad, which was once polio free, had 132 new cases of children with polio. Only Pakistan had more children affected that year. Chad, which had no polio cases from 2000 to 2003, has also exported the polio virus to other neighboring countries, such as the Central African Republic and experts fear that the great strides made in ending polio could be rolled back.

“The circulation of wild poliovirus persists in Chad due to not only the low quality of vaccination campaigns but also the weakness in routine EPI. I can assure you that UNICEF and other partners, WHO, CDC, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary International, are committed to support government efforts to eradicate polio and to ensure full immunization of children in Chad against other vaccine-preventable diseases,” said Bruno Maes, UNICEF Chad Representative.

Since 1988, a major global polio eradication initiative supported by partners such as the World Health Organization, Rotary, the Gates Foundation, the Center for Disease Control and UNICEF, has reduced polio by 99 %. Since then, some 20 million volunteers have immunized 2.5 billion children. As a result, the number of polio endemic countries has fallen from 125 in 1988 to four today if India is included. The three other endemic countries are Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Farrow is bringing the same vaccination message to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The DRC, which is ravaged by conflict in the Eastern part of the country, has also seen a re-emergence of polio.

While in Chad, Farrow also visited Mao in the Sahel belt, and made an urgent plea for the world to provide immediate life-saving assistance to some 1.1 million severely malnourished children. She also visited women and children in Eastern Chad displaced by violence in the neighboring Darfur region and in parts of Chad.
