Some of Britain’s favorite celebrities auction have personally designed candle holders to raise awareness of the race for a cure for Parkinson’s.
Stephen Fry, Ricky Gervais, Alesha Dixon, Kevin McCloud and a host of other celebrities have pledged their support for finding a cure for Parkinson’s by designing their own candle holders which are being auctioned off in support of The Cure Parkinson’s Trust’s ILLUMINATE campaign.
The 34 specially designed candle holders will be auctioned on eBay for 10 days starting 7pm on 22nd FEBRUARY 2011. You are invited to bid for your favourite celebrity’s candle holder on eBay all in the name of an exceptionally worthy cause. The entire collection of designs is also available in a lovely book.
In the UK alone, one in every 500 people has Parkinson’s and one in 20 of those is under the age of 40. ILLUMINATE aims to not only raise funds towards a cure for the degenerative neurological condition, but also to educate and inform young people about its effect. This latest effort is being supported by a long list of top personalities – including Robbie Coltraine, Sophie Dahl, Tony Robinson, Michael Caine, James Blunt, Geri Halliwell, Rolf Harris, Katherine Jenkins, David Walliams, Matt Lucas and many more – who have each designed and signed their own candle holder to throw light on the race for a cure.
ILLUMINATE was started by campaigner Becky Hurd, who at the age of 29, newly married and looking forward to starting a family, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Becky commented, “It was devastating news which came completely out of the blue… but for the sake of my two year old daughter and wonderful husband, I am determined to do everything I can to make a difference and help find a cure.”
Speaking about why she chose to get involved, Alesha Dixon remarked, “Becky Hurd’s campaign to shine a light on the race for a cure is inspirational – Parkinson’s is a debilitating disease, but the fact that there are so many studies working to find a cure is giving hope to the 120,000 people battling the condition across the UK. Now fingers crossed my candle holder raises a decent amount of money to support them!”
These top quality, bone china candle holders, are made in Stoke on Trent and filled with 100 hour white wax. They are approximately 75mm in diameter and 92mm tall and come in a specially made presentation box. The design has been kiln-fired onto the candle holder, during the manufacturing process, to make it permanent. Remember – the items for auction here are truly unique – only one of each design exists.
Additionally, the charity is auctioning 10 hand signed photographs sent by celebrities in response to the appeal for support.
Included with every item is a Certificate of Authenticity signed by The Cure Parkinson’s Trust’s Managing Director.

Alyssa has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2003. In 2004, she launched UNICEF’s Trick or Treat campaign.
Milano is the lead ambassador for the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Disease Control. Her first action as ambassador was to donate $250,000 to the charity’s Drug Fund to be used to battle lymphatic filariasis (LF) in Myanmar.
She says, “Words cannot fully express the devastation and horror caused by NTDs [Neglected Tropical Diseases]. Until now, these diseases have been hidden in the shadows, but working with the Global Network, I am focused on bringing this tragedy to the public eye.”

Did you have any concerns joining the show and finding your own identity as a judge?
None whatsoever. I got such an identity with this band and for all the videos that I�ve done I figured it�d be a shoo-in. The part that�s a little difficult is judging young kids that I think they all have a voice, but actually being honest and open. So it took me a couple of minutes to get into the role of that, but I�ve grown accustomed to it and it�s fun. I kind of take what I�ve grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself � my own vocals, my own band � and kind of laid that across the talent that comes across my view.
Have you said anything so far as to any of the contestants during the auditions that you�ve regretted immediately afterwards?
Yes. I made some harsh comments the first week, and they snapped back and said, �What do you mean?� But I only did two of those. There were only two of those because I didn�t want that to happen again. I couldn�t say that you were no good without substantiating why, and a couple times that I said, �You know you just don�t have it,� they did ask me why, and I couldn�t tell them why. It�s like I�m looking for that certain something.
Are you bringing a little more of a rock element to the show?
Yes, my personality but I�ve got a good ear for all music. It�s not just a one phase type judging. I�m good for all different music and listening to voicing, and the spirit of, and the imperfections of someone�s voice because not all great singers make great rock stars. It�s some of those voices that aren�t the best that make the best rock stars I mean to say. So it�s been fun. I don�t take this too seriously and I take it seriously, so it�s been a real hoot for me.
Did Jennifer Lopez's involvement influence your decision to be a part of the show?
It did at first. At first, I was told she wasn�t, she was out, and I was a little bummed, but I met Randy first and I loved Randy. I thought he and I got on within the first five minutes. It was like we were separated at birth, and we had so many similarities, and the music curriculum and program. Whatever he�s been through I�ve been through, and we mentioned names and we knew everybody and it was like how we hadn�t met before was beyond me. And then when I was on the way from England to America, I saw J. Lo�s movie Back-Up Plan and I fell in love with her. The way she played her part I could so relate to and I thought anybody that could be this open and honest even acting �. All I can tell you is when I met her she was exactly all that and I was grateful that she got the part.

My, here we are nearly in the middle of February and this is the first edition of Vintage Fashionista Friday that we've had this year (though to be fair, the last one was on Friday December 31st). British comic actor Hugh Laurie was always a regular face on the BBC’s Comic Relief charity specials, and he went on to co-found the Band From TV, a charity musical group composed of TV stars. The band’s charity trust provides funding and resources to projects including the Pediatric Epilepsy Project, Save the Children and The Art of Elysium.
But as a sometime sufferer of clinical depression, Laurie’s charitable passion seems to be mental illness. Laurie and the supporting cast of House, in which he stars, are selling t-shirts featuring the screen psychologist’s truism “Everybody Lies”, and donating the profits to mental health charities.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness is a primary beneficiary, and is dedicated to improving the quality of life of mental illness sufferers, and to researching methods of prevention and, ultimately, cures for mental illnesses.
